This might be the best sauce I’ve ever made — and I’m not even a huge mustard person.

It’s creamy, a little tangy, just sweet enough, with that subtle heat from the hot honey that keeps you going back for another bite. It started as something I threw together for wraps, and now I keep it in the fridge at all times.

It’s especially good with crispy chicken — popcorn chicken, chicken tenders, anything like that — but honestly, it works on just about everything. We’ve used it in wraps, on tomato sandwiches, with meatballs… even as a dip for onion rings. It’s one of those sauces that just doesn’t miss.

What Is Hot Honey Mustard Sauce?

Think of this as a creamy, slightly upgraded version of honey mustard — but better balanced and way more versatile.

Instead of just honey and mustard, this version has a creamy base (mayo + sour cream), a mix of mustards for depth, and hot honey for that sweet heat. The result is smoother, richer, and a lot more interesting than the usual version.

Even if you’re not big on mustard, this one hits differently.

Ingredients You’ll Need

1/2 cup mayonnaise

1/4 cup sour cream

1 tablespoon Dijon mustard

1 tablespoon whole grain mustard

1 tablespoon yellow mustard

2–3 tablespoons hot honey (adjust to taste)

1/4 teaspoon salt

1/4 teaspoon black pepper

Using a mix of mustards might seem like a lot, but each one plays a role. Dijon adds sharpness, whole grain brings texture, and yellow mustard gives it that classic flavor.

How to Make Hot Honey Mustard Sauce

  1. Add the mayonnaise and sour cream to a bowl.
  2. Stir in the Dijon, whole grain mustard, and yellow mustard.
  3. Add the hot honey, salt, and black pepper.
  4. Whisk until smooth and fully combined.
  5. Taste and adjust — add more hot honey for sweetness and heat, or more Dijon for a sharper bite.

How to Use It

This is where it really shines.

We use this sauce for:

  • crispy chicken (popcorn chicken, chicken tenders, cutlets)
  • onion rings (so good as a dip)
  • grilled chicken wraps with lettuce, tomato, and avocado
  • tomato sandwiches (with a little salt and good bread)
  • meatballs
  • rice bowls
  • roasted vegetables
  • friesor sweet potato wedges (so good dipped into this)

It’s one of those sauces you make once and then start finding excuses to use.

Tips for the Best Flavor

  • Use a good hot honey — it makes a difference
  • Let it sit for 10–15 minutes before serving if you can
  • Don’t skip the salt — it balances everything
  • Adjust to your taste — sweeter, tangier, or spicier

How to Store It

Store in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 5 days.

Give it a quick stir before using — it may thicken slightly as it chills.
